Juniors set to tee it up at Chinook Golf Course

Chinook Golf Course in Swift Current will host the Saskatchewan Junior Championships beginning July 4.

The Saskatchewan Junior Women’s and Men’s Championships will get underway Tuesday at Swift Current’s Chinook Golf Course.

Over 100 golfers under the age of 19 will compete for national championship positions at the top level, plus age divisions for under-17, under-15, and under-13 champions. The third Junior-Junior, a two-day, 36-holes Stableford Scoring format tournament will also be held over the first two days for players 12 and under.

Chinook Golf Course last hosted a Golf Saskatchewan provincial championship in 2017, when the juniors were also played at the venue. Melville’s Chloe Sies and Humboldt golfer Tayden Wallin won the under-19 championships that year.

The golf course also hosted the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games. Head Professional Ken Koster said the club is ready to welcome back Saskatchewan’s best young golfers.

“On behalf of the City of Swift Current and the Chinook Golf Course I would like to welcome all golfers, relatives and friends to the 2023 Provincial Junior Championships. We hope your time in Swift Current is full of great memories and great golf,” Koster said.

The event is the first Saskatchewan championship of the season. Four junior women and four junior men national quota spots will be competed for among the players playing the maximum yardage.

The defending champion on the junior women’s side is Yorkton’s Ella Kozak, Chase Pochylko of Saskatoon won the boys’ title in 2022. Neither player are in the field this summer.

The practice round will take place Monday, the first tee time will be approximately 7 a.m. Tuesday. The 54-hole championship will conclude on Thursday afternoon pending weather.
