Johnson lone local to earn Elk Ridge Open spot

Kade Johnson earned the final exemption into the Elk Ridge Open later this week.

It was another dramatic day on the 17th green at Waskesiu Golf Course.

Yorkton’s Kade Johnson needed a playoff-hole birdie to punch his ticket into the Elk Ridge Open beginning Thursday at Elk Ridge Resort.

Teeing off in the third group out, Johnson set an early pace at 3-under, 67. Then the wait began.

The score was good enough to get into a three-way playoff for one spot into the Open. Johnson hit his approach shot to the back of the 17th green, was away for his birdie but and made the putt.

Both Texas Harper and Patrick Sullivan couldn’t get their birdies to drop allowing Johnson to enter the Elk Ridge Open field for the second straight year.

Junior Alex Swinnerton (above) put up a great fight on his home course shooting 2-under, 68. He missed his birdie putt on 18 by mere inches, just missing out on the playoff.

Saskatoon’s Chase Pochylko (below), another junior looking to get into the field in Elk Ridge also finished at 2-under par.
