The Saskatchewan Amateur Championships will tee off Tuesday at Golf Kenosee as the course plays host to the combined events for the first time.
The women’s amateur has been hosted at Kenosee Lake, that was in 2014. The 25-and-over women’s division is now in it’s fourth year.
Kenosee held the 2010 Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur (25+) in 2010, the men’s amateur championship has never been hosted by Golf Kenosee. Proshop Manager Ben Brown said the course is eager to play host to the championships.
“Golf Kenosee is very excited to host this year’s amateur, we always love showing off our course and we are looking forward to seeing the best players in the province come here and enjoy our course and the area. I know Kelvin (van Winkoop, superintendent) and his crew will have the course in fantastic shape, and it should be a good challenge,” Brown said.
The women’s championships will be played over 54 holes beginning Tuesday concluding Thursday afternoon. The Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship will also conclude after 54 holes. The men’s amateur is a 72 hole event. All players within six strokes of the leader will make the cut and play Friday. Brown said Golf Kenosee will hold up well against the best players the province has to offer, plus the park has many amenities when the rounds are complete for the day.
“We think we have a beautiful and challenging layout, all the holes are different, you will get some different lies with the rolling hills, and when it plays firm and fast you will have to be careful around the greens, Brown said. “Kenosee has lots to offer when you’re not on the course as well, bars and restaurants, walking trails for miles, camping, boating, fishing, kayaking, beaches and an inflatable waterpark on the lake. Plenty of fun for the whole family.”
Chloe Wills of Kyle, Sask. is the defending women’s amateur champion. Charmaine Hayden of Winnipeg won the event in Humboldt last year; she is not entered.
Regina’s Luke Cote is the reigning men’s amateur champion, Corey Bailey of Swift Current, Sask. comes in as the defending 25-and-over champion. There are 135 players registered through all four championships.
Wills will start the women’s event at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Cote will be first to tee off in the men’s event at 8 a.m.
