Familiar faces highlight leaderboards at Junior Championships

Regina’s Hallie Crozier is the day one leader of the Junior Women’s Championship at Swift Current’s Chinook Golf Course Tuesday.

The Royal Regina Golf Club member battled the early morning cool elements and posted a 1-over par, 74 in the opening round.

Medicine Hat’s Sarah Armstrong sits in second place.

In the under-17 competition it’s a very close race with all three golfers just two shots apart. Chloe Wills of Kyle is first at 11-over par, 84. Sarah Henderson of Saskatoon is a shot back, Niya Friesen of Swift Current is third.

The under-15 girls category is also crowded, Grace Odnokon of Saskatoon is the leader at 6-over par, 78. Yuna Lee is in second a pair of strokes behind, Justine Leon of Calgary is third.

Regina’s Luke Cote started hot carding a pair of birdies and an eagle in the first five holes Tuesday to assist in an opening round 66.

The Royal Regina Golf Club player was one of just two competitors to shoot under par from the maximum yardage. Cote has a five shot lead over Darien Herlick, the other under par shooter who fired a 71.

Davin Karst of Assiniboia and Max McDougall of Prince Albert are tied in third at even par.

In the under-17 division Dane Giesbrecht of Warman leads the way with an even par 72 in round one.

A pair of players sit two shots back behind Giesbrecht, Cameron Schwab (Maple Creek) and Aiden Walker of Regina are tied for second place at 3-over par. The is a logjam behind the trio in third place.

In the under-15 category Aricin Franklin found himself alone in the red after day one. The Saskatoon player fired 1-under par 69 Tuesday to pace himself to a five shot advantage over Ethan Hunter and six clear of Kai Kriekle of Regina.

Reigning under-13 champion Austin Nesbitt of Pilot Butte looks to retain his title after stroking a 70 in round one.

Hudson Diederichs of Saskatoon is second (73) and Tylan Wallin of Humboldt is third at 75.

Round two will start at 7 a.m. on Wednesday at Swift Current’s Chinook Golf Course.
