Sask. golfers claim three medals at NAIG

The North American Indigenous Games wrapped up in Halifax last week with Saskatchewan taking the overall medal standings with a total of 175, three of those accomplishments were on the golf course.
Competing at the Links at Brunello in Halifax, Nova Scotia, two junior women from the province won medals as did one junior male.
In the under-16 female division Hailey Thunderchild placed third with a 54-hole score of 301.
In the under-19 female category Cassidy Strongarm made it to a championship playoff where she was edged by Nakomis Mitchell. Strongarm comes back to Saskatchewan with a silver medal.
Gabrielle Paskemin also played well finishing in fourth place, missing the podium by a dozen strokes.
Solomon Ness captured a silver medal in the male under-19 category thanks to his three round total of 237, he was eight strokes behind the winner.
Jagger Bitz finished in seventh place at 254.
Both competitors in the under-16 male category were close to the top-three but Dade Bernatchez and Dante Gamble placed fourth and fifth respectively. Bernatchez shot 226, he was nine shots back of third, Gamble fired a total score of 243.

Senior dominance continues for Walker and Hallberg

New year, same champions at the 2023 Saskatchewan Senior Championships at Cooke Municipal Golf Course on Wednesday.
Kim Walker of Regina won her third straight 55-plus championship holding off Kathy Ziglo for her fourth senior championship overall.
Joining Walker and Ziglo on Team Saskatchewan at the 2023 Canadian Senior omen’s Championship will be Prince Albert’s Pauline McDougall who was third.
Walker spoke with Golf Saskatchewan after the win.
The 60 and over competition named after Mae Balmos, was won by Robin Action of Lloydminster. She edged Moose Jaw’s Lorie Boyle for her first victory in the category.

Rick Hallberg captured his fourth consecutive senior championship Wednesday and fifth overall with a four shot win over Brad Phelps of Saskatoon.
Cliff Selander of Prince Albert will join Hallberg and Phelps at the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship in September.
Hallberg spoke about the win after the final round.
The super-senior (65+) came down to a playoff between Colin Coben of Delisle and Swift Current based veteran Brent Wotypka. Wotypka (pictured below) won the playoff to take the age division and seal a position at the national event as well. Also receiving quota positions at the Canadian championship is Martin Ring and Trent Kachur, both of Prince Albert.

The legends (75+) division again featured just one golfer, but Moose Jaw’s Ken Bradley continues to compete and shot 79, 81, 81 over the 54-hole event at Cooke Municipal.

The Mid-Masters Men’s Championship for players over 40 up to 54 years of age was won by Spiritwood’s Todd Turgeon with a three-round score of 1-under par, 212. Turgeon received an exemption into the Canadian Mid-Amateur Men’s Championship with the win, however he had already punched his ticket to the national event through the Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur Championship.

Golfers battle elements during round two of Senior Championships

The names at the top of the leaderboards at the Saskatchewan Senior Championships in Prince Albert are the same after day one, but the majority of the competitors had a longer day than what was planned during Tuesday’s second round.
At 1:50 p.m. a thunderstorm rolled over Cooke Municipal Golf Course forcing an hour and 25 minute delay, with five groups left to start their round.
Regina’s Kim Walker and the entire women’s field was on the course when the air horns signaled the stoppage due to lightning. The pause didn’t alter the Wascana Country Club’s players’ game immensely, reigning back-to-back champion shot 75 Monday in round one, that vaulted to 80 in rainy conditions Tuesday. She leads the event by nine shots over Kathy Ziglo of Saskatoon.
Prince Albert’s Pauline McDougall was the big mover of the day jumping to third from eighth thanks to an 8-over 81 on Tuesday.

In the men’s senior championship a three-way tie after round one is now down to two.
Defending champion Rick Hallberg of Weyburn and Prince Albert player Cliff Selander remain tied for the lead, they followed their 74 on Monday with 1-over par 72 during the second round.
Martin Ring, also of Prince Albert was tied after day one, he shot 77 in round two and still sits in third and will play in the same group in the championship round Wednesday.
Several players had better rounds in the rain on Tuesday and climbed the leaderboard, Brad Phelps of Saskatoon moved up four spots to fourth place, Shawn Strelau, also of Saskatoon moved up five positions to fifth, he’s tied with Prince Albert’s Trent Kachur for fifth.
Delisle’s Colin Coben climbed 10 spots into a tie for seventh.
Spiritwood’s Todd Turgeon retained his lead atop the Mid-Masters (40+) Championship, he shot 1-over par 72 on Tuesday, Turgeon leads the age division by five shots over Hallberg.

Walker opens big lead at Senior Women’s; three-way tie in Senior Men’s

Kim Walker of Regina has a large lead after day one of the 2023 Saskatchewan Senior Women’s Championship at Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert.
The Wascana Country Club member carded a pair of birdies on route to an opening round score of 3-over par 75 on Monday. The two-time reigning champion has a nine shot lead through 18 of the 54 hole championship.
Kathy Ziglo of Saskatoon and Lorie Boyle from Moose Jaw sit tied for second place at 11-over par 84. Robin Acton of Lloydminster is fourth at 85, Jo-Anne Schiller (Lloydminster) and Kathy Hopfner (Swift Current) are tied for fifth at 86.

In the Mid-Masters (40+) Championship Todd Turgeon sits on top of the leaderboard at 2-under 69. He leads reigning champion Rick Hallberg by five shots after day one at Cooke Municipal Golf Course.
Three players are tied in third place including Kris Carley (Carnduff), Brent Wotypka (Swift Current), and Dave Christiansen (Nipawin) all carded rounds of 4-over par 75 on Monday.

The Saskatchewan Senior Men’s Championship is led by the three-time champion Hallberg of Weyburn.
The Golf Kenosee member sits on top the 55+ leaderboard, but he has company.
Prince Albert players Martin Ring and Cliff Selander also opened the championship with 3-over par 74’s on Monday.
Three players are tied for fourth at 75 including Wotypka, Christiansen, and Saskatoon’s David Bird.

Cooke Municipal set to host Seniors, Mid-Masters Championships

For the second straight year Prince Albert’s Cooke Municipal Golf Course will host provincial golf championships.
The Senior (50+) Women’s, Senior (55+) Men’s, and Mid-Masters (40+) Championships will run coincidently from Monday to Wednesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the course that hosted the 2022 Amateur Championships last July. The senior event was slated to be at Cooke in 2020 but was rescheduled due to the pandemic. Now ready to welcome over 120 competitors to the “Gateway to the North” city General Manager Darcy Myers said the club is excited to add another successful event to the course’s historic resume.
“We look forward to hosting the 2023 Saskatchewan Senior Championships at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course. We hope everyone enjoys what our area has to offer,” Myers said.
The Senior Women’s Championship has 25 players in the field including two-time reigning champion Kim Walker of Regina.
Over 100 men will compete in their events, with many players competing in both championships if age eligible.
Weyburn’s Rick Hallberg has held the senior trophy for the last three years and four of the previous five, the Golf Kenosee player is also the back-to-back mid-masters title holder.
Saskatchewan will enter a team in both the Canadian Senior Women’s and Senior Men’s Championships, the winner of the mid-masters will receive a quota spot to the Canadian Mid-Amateur (25+) Championship as well.
Pending weather delays the champions will be crowned on Wednesday evening.

Amateur championships wrap up in North Battleford

Golf Saskatchewan wrapped up the 2023 Amateur Championships Friday at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club.
On Thursday, Calgary’s Emily Cornwall claimed the Amateur Women’s title by a shot over Hallie Crozier of Regina.
She spoke with Golf Saskatchewan after the final round Thursday.
The Mid-Amateur champion is Tim Acaster of North Battleford. He used his local knowledge to outlast Jehremy Ryde in a playoff to claim the qin in his hometown.
Acaster talked about the week on Thursday.
The Men’s Amateur Championship concluded Friday with 23 players making the cut and competing in the 112th edition of the tournament.
Two-time Saskatchewan junior champion Josh Nagy was the champion shooting 9-under par over 72 holes.
The Riverside Country Club member spoke about the win after the round.
Golf Saskatchewan will announce the national attendees later this week.
Calgary’s Cornwall takes women’s am; Acaster wins mid-am on home course

The Saskatchewan Amateur Women’s Championship and Mid-Amateur Men’s Championship concluded Thursday at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club.
Emily Cornwall was the winner of the 104th provincial women’s championship as the Springbank Links Golf Course member shot rounds of 79, 74, and 84 for a 54-hole total of 237, one lower than Regina’s Hallie Crozier. The Calgary resident said winning the Saskatchewan championship is exciting.
“Moving day was amazing for me and today was less than perfect, but I mean it is golf and you have to put things into perspective. I won a tournament today and it feels really good obviously,” she said.
Placing third was Kaylee Chung of Vancouver, she was three behind Cornwall. Brooklin Fry of Shell Lake, Sask. finished in fourth at 242, she was the reigning champion. Regina golfer Alex Schmidt was fifth at 248.
In the first Mid-Amateur Women’s Championship Regina’s Kim Walker was the winner. Golf Canada is now hosting a Canadian Mid-Amateur Women’s Championship later this summer. The division is for players 25 years and older. Saskatoon’s Abra Thompson also is eligible for a national spot alongside Walker.

In the Mid-Amateur Men’s Championship, also for players 25 and over, Tim Acaster defeated Jehremy Ryde of Saskatoon in a one-hole playoff at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club.
“Good, it always nice to win,” the North Battleford product said after the round. “It was a bit of a struggle out there today, we were all playing pretty good on the front and then we hit a few bad shots, you know how it goes, feeds off itself. Made a few putts on 17 and 18 to force a playoff which was awesome.”
Defending champion Brett Henry of Prince Albert placed third, one shot back of both Acaster and Ryde at 216. Another Prince Albert player, Cory Selander took fourth overall (218), there was a two-way tie for fifth between Todd Turgeon of Spiritwood and Shaun Dunphy of Saskatoon.
Acaster along with 11 other players qualified for the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship later this summer.
The Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championship continues in North Battleford Friday. The final round will feature 23 players that made the cut to compete in the 112th edition of the event.
Tee times begin at 7 a.m., the final group will tee off at 8:10 a.m.

New leaders at Amateur Championships

There are new leaders at the Saskatchewan Amateur Championships at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club (NBGCC).
Calgary’s Emily Cornwall is now in front of the Women’s Amateur Championship after Wednesday’s 2-over par 74. She is at 9-over par through 36 holes, eight strokes ahead of Hallie Crozier of Regina.
Defending champion Brooklin Fry sits in third at 19-over par. Kaylee Chung of Vancouver is fourth (+20) and Chaplin resident Holly Knudsen rounds out the top five going into Thursday’s championship round.
Regina’s Kim Walker is leading the Mid-Amateur (+25) Championship by a trio of shots over Abra Thompson.
The final round will begin at 12:40 p.m. The final threesome tees off at 1:20 p.m.

The Men’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur (+25) Championship is now led by Saskatoon’s Jehremy Ryde.
The Riverside Country Club member posted one of just four sub-par rounds at the NBGCC during round two. Combined with an opening day 3-under par 69, Ryde shot 1-under par 71 giving the former Eston resident a one shot cushion going into Thursday.
North Battleford’s Tim Acaster sits second overall just a shot back (69,72) and Saskatoon player Marc Sweeney is just another back in third place.
First round leader Cole Obrigewitsch is tied fourth with Chase Pochylko. The leaderboard gets crowded in sixth with a half dozen players tied at even par going into the third round.
The Mid-Amateur Championship is a 54-hole event, the winner will be crowned alongside the women’s champions after round three. The first tee time is 7 a.m.
The top 20 amateur men and ties will move onto the fourth round on Friday to play for the amateur title and team positions.

Crozier takes first round lead again; Obrigewitsch sets pace at men’s amateur

Regina’s Hallie Crozier is in familiar territory after the first round of the Saskatchewan Women’s Amateur Championship.
Last Tuesday, Crozier was leading the junior championship before taking second place in the tournament. A week later she sits atop the amateur provincial leaderboard following the first 18 holes at North Battleford Golf and Country Club. Crozier carded a trio of birdies on route to an opening round 6-over par, 78.
Calgary’s Emily Cornwall is a shot back in third. Holly Knudsen of Chaplin is two back of the lead in third, Lauren Fox (Creighton) sits in fourth at 9-over par, 81.
Regina’s Kim Walker leads the mid-amateur (25+) category at 10-over par, the two-time reigning senior women’s champion is tied fifth over with Kaylee Chung (Vancouver) and Niya Friesen of Swift Current.
The first tee time of the second round will begin at 12:50 p.m.

Cole Obrigewitsch (pictured above) is the leader after round one of the Men’s Amateur Championship in North Battleford.
The Deer Valley golfer drained five birdies on Tuesday and a bogey to card an opening hole score of 4-under 68 to lead by one over a trio of competitors.
North Battleford’s Tim Acaster, alongside Saskatoon players Jehremy Ryde and Tommy Danielson are all just a shot behind Obrigewitsch.
The logjam continues with five players tied for fifth at 70.
Acaster and Ryde are tied on top of the mid-amateur (25+) leaderboard at 3-under par 69, Kyle Wiebe (Madison), Scott Allan (Saskatoon), and Todd Turgeon (Spiritwood) are all tied for third at 2-under par, 70.

Amateur Championships set to tee off in North Battleford

The North Battleford Golf and Country Club (NBGCC) is set to welcome over 130 amateur golfers for the Saskatchewan Amateur Championships starting Tuesday.
The NBGCC last hosted a provincial tournament in 2017 when the Senior Championships were held at the club. Head Professional Dana Johnson said hosting the top tournament in the province for the first time since 2004 is exciting for the club.
“We have a premier course that is in fantastic shape for the provincial amateurs,” Johnson said. “Hopefully the players enjoy the test the course will provide as well as the other amenities including our new restaurant, Blend Kitchen + Bar, and the entire Battleford region for the next four days which will likely be very exciting and concluding with great champions.”
The 104th edition of the Saskatchewan Women’s Amateur Championship will begin Tuesday at 7 a.m. There are 14 players in the field including defending champion Brooklin Fry of Shell Lake. Two-tie senior champion Kim Walker of Regina will compete, the Wascana Country Club player and staffer member won the amateur title in 2016.
Current college competitors Autumn Neiszner (Regina) and Holly Knudsen (Chaplin) as well as recently graduated two-time college winner Alex Schmidt of Regina will also play. The field includes a strong field of juniors that played last week in Swift Current.
Golf Saskatchewan added a Mid-Amateur (25+) Women’s Championship division this year, two players are eligible to potentially move onto the Canadian Mid-Amateur Women’s Championship.
The 112th Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championship will have a new winner at the end of four rounds on Friday, two-time winner Roman Timmerman turned professional.
The 54-hole Mid-Amateur (25+) Championship will begin at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday. Almost 120 players are in the field competing in both events and their eligible age division.
The top three players will earn a chance to represent Saskatchewan at the national events later this summer.

The women’s trophy presentation and the awarding of the mid-amateur men’s champion will take place Thursday afternoon, the men’s amateur event has a 54-hole cut, the top-20 players and tied will compete for 18 more holes to crown a champion sometime Friday afternoon.
