Odnokon makes more history; Scissons shatters Golf Kenosee record on route to mid-amateur championship

Grace Odnokon has won her second straight Saskatchewan championship.

Odnokon’s under-19 and under-17 wins last week in Warman were followed up by the Saskatoon product winning the Saskatchewan Amateur Women’s Championship on Thursday at Golf Kenosee.

After shooting 81 in round one, the 16-year-old needed to fight back and pass first round leader Alex Schmidt of Regina. The pair were tied going into round three and Odnokon was able to edge Schmidt by one shot.

Odnokon joins her mom Carla on the championship trophy, the first mother-daughter tandem to win the provincial amateur championship. Both have two junior wins to their careers as well with Grace still having two more years of junior eligibly.

Schmidt did win the mid-amateur (25+) championship. Placing third and earning a spot on the national team was Kyle’s Chloe Wills. The defending champion was just two shots behind the lead.

It was a record-breaking day for Connor Scissons at Golf Kenosee.

The Saskatoon product carded seven birdies and an eagle to claw back from seven shots behind the lead and win his first mid-amateur title.

Scisson’s 9-under par, 63 smashed the previous Golf Kenosee tournament record by three shots. He finished at 5-under par for the event with Carson Harcourt of Regina one shot back. Harcourt lipped out his birdie attempt on hole 18 to force a playoff.

Jesse Gibson of Saskatoon will round out Team Saskatchewan at the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championships later this summer.

The Men’s Amateur Championship will continue with round four Friday at Kenosee Lake. With Scissons jumping 20 spots on the leaderboard, he is tied with 15-year-old Austin Nesbitt for the overall lead.

Regina’s Drayjon Sparvier will also be in the final group siting at 4-under par, tied with Harcourt and Ethan Hunter.

The final round will begin at 7 a.m.
