The largest tournament field of the season is in Humboldt this week for the Saskatchewan Amateur Championships starting Tuesday at the Humboldt Golf Club (HGC).
The Women’s Amateur Championship was hosted by the HGC in 2014, the men’s event has never been played in Humboldt in it’s 114 year history.
Almost 150 players are registered through the amateurs and mid-amateurs (25 and over). Four events are involved, with the amateurs and mid-amateurs being played alongside each other.
The Women’s Championships and Men’s Mid-Amateur will be played for three days over 54 holes, the men’s amateur championship will have a cut after day three and conclude on Friday after 72 holes.
HGC General Manager Corey Schweitzer said the build up to the tournaments has been fantastic and the club is ready to host the marquee events.
“Ever since players have started to show up weeks ago for a round or today during the practice round, there has been nothing but praise for the course,” he said. “The greens are amazing, possibly best ever in the history of the club. The staff has been incredible from Glenn (Wildeman, superintendent) down. We are very excited to host this event.”
Tee times will begin at 7 a.m. on Tuesday for round one. The men will tee off first on day one. Reigning amateur champion Kye Fisher of Leduc, Alta. will be the first player to hit. Defending mid-amateur champion Danny Klughart of Prince Albert will start at 7:20 a.m.
Ella Kozak of Yorkton won the women’s amateur in 2021 and the junior championship last year, she will be the first shot of the women’s championship at 2:20 p.m. Sela Ogada of Calgary won the amateur championship last year, she is not in the field. Carla Odnokon won the mid-amateur last year, she will tee off at 2:30 p.m.
